I wanted to drop you a note about a bill I hope you will support. The state currently operates a bicycle racing velodrome at the National Sports Center in Blaine (one of only 25 in the US). This facility unfortunately will come to the end of its life cycle after 2019 after nearly 30 years of use.
Minnesota has been a world-class competitive cycling destination for many years. Minnesota hosts one of the premier professional road races on the US calendar each year. Olympians, world and national champions have all raced on Minnesota’s velodrome and road race courses. Most impressively, the Minnesota High School Cycling League has grown from a handful of teams and 135 racers to a statewide phenomenon with nearly 50 high school bicycling teams and over 750 participating student-athletes.
Continuing our support of cycling with a new indoor facility will raise our standing in the international cycling community and will allow for year-round racing, providing a venue for all levels of athletes to train and compete during our long winters.
SF 2319 and HF 2789 seek a modest appropriation that will allow the MN Amateur Sports Commission to locate a site for the new velodrome that can best serve our athletes and begin the design process. I would appreciate your support to continue our strong competitive cycling history.
